When times are hard dont waste.

Re: When times are hard dont waste.
I've actually eaten roadkill before.
I ran over a rabbit; it died quickly and was halfway skinned by the impact. I took it home, gutted it and popped it in the oven. MMMMM-mmmm! Tasty! :D Also, lots of people around here TRY to hit deer, it's like hunting out of season. |
Re: When times are hard dont waste.
The one deer that I have hit ended up in my freezer.
If I know when a deer was killed and its in decent shape (most of the flesh has not been pulverized) they also end up in my freezer. This past spring, I was amazed at the number of deer in the ditches that were uncovered as the snow melted. What a waste of good food. I have eaten roadkill pheasant also. A couple that I hit and some that were hit by others. If I were down on my luck I would not be as choosy about my table fare. |

Not to get anyone into trouble, the names have been left out to protect the innocent.
I know a guy who was friends with a state trooper in our area. Whenever the trooper got a report of a deer/car accident he would call this guy so he could retrieve the deer. You can get a LOT of meat this way and it saves the cost of bullets. |
Re: When times are hard dont waste.
Here in Tennessee we have a "Road-Kill" law! If it gets hit on the road it's fair game. The only thing you need to have a tag for is bear. Then you call the TWRA and they come out and tag your bear. In my county if you call the cops to get an accident report for hitting a deer before the cops get there they'll be someone there getting the deer. Everyone here listens to the police radio.

Good for dog or pig food too presumably, if it's too messed up to be edible for humans.

I hit a deer a few years back. Cop had to finish it off, then gave us a tag for it. We had some awesome stew that evening (the meat was pre-tenderized :D).

The only issue with that is possible burst internal organs. There is a reason you clean the guts out of a dead creature including intestines etc. and hang it to drain the blood. You don't want to contaminate the meat. I would keep that in mind if you plan on eating a roadkill, no matter how good it looks, if the internal organs are bust, you are going to have to clean the carcass thoroughly, and cook the meat thoroughly. No rare steaks. </slv> |
